Mercury (Mercurius)

The most complex and paradoxical alchemical symbol. Mercurius is simultaneously the beginning, middle, and end of the work—the transforming agent itself.

Historical Origin

Named after the Roman messenger god, Mercurius embodies the quicksilver nature of transformation and communication between realms.

Alchemical Meaning

The prima materia, the philosophers mercury, the spirit hidden in matter. Mercurius is volatile, transformative, and contains all opposites.

Psychological Interpretation

The unconscious itself, the spirit of the depths, the trickster archetype. Mercurius is the spirit that both wounds and heals.
