Gold (Sol)

The solar principle, representing perfection, consciousness, the masculine, and the goal of the alchemical work. Associated with the sun, the king, and the color gold.

Historical Origin

The sun symbol appears in the earliest alchemical texts from Hellenistic Egypt. Gold was seen as the terrestrial manifestation of solar perfection.

Alchemical Meaning

Represents the perfected state of matter, the philosophers gold, and the culmination of the opus. Gold is incorruptible and eternal.

Psychological Interpretation

The conscious ego, the rational mind, and masculine energy. In the coniunctio, Sol unites with Luna to produce the lapis.
