Mortificatio

The killing or death of the matter, a severe operation representing the necessary death that precedes rebirth and transformation.

Historical Context

Often associated with the nigredo, mortification involves the complete destruction of the old form to allow new life to emerge.

Symbolism

Death, the skull, the raven, the corpse, the grave. Imagery of suffering, defeat, and humiliation.

Psychological Correlate

The death of the ego, defeat of pride, depression, the experience of meaninglessness that precedes transformation.
